Betula nana

Arctic Birch, Dwarf Birch.  Very cold hardy plants look like miniature multi-stemmed birch trees.  Rounded green leaves, up to 3/4" long, have distinctly serrated margins.  Foliage and tiny round buds are evenly spaced along thin brown stems, lending the plants a delicate air.  Leaves turn yellow or red in fall and little catkins appear in spring.  Has a spreading habit; trim as needed to maintain the desired shape.  Very cold hardy, but not tolerant of warm southern climates (questionable above zone 5).  Ideal as a little tree for fairy gardens, miniature gardens, troughs and containers.  Keep evenly moist; does not like to dry out.  Plants are growing in 3.5"h x 4"diameter pots.  Plants are currently dormant.
