Ulmus parviflora 'Seiju'
Seiju Dwarf Chinese Elm. One of the coolest little trees for fairy gardens. Tiny elm leaves are dark green with deep veins and serrated edges. Knotty trunk has silvery bark and lots of character. Dark brown round buds adorn the stems in fall and winter. Has 4-season appeal: Plants leaf out in spring, display green foliage in summer, turn yellow/orange in fall, and reveal its silvery bark and structure for the winter. In the ground, with time and without pruning, plants can reach 10 feet + in height. Popular bonsai and container plant. Prune in late summer or fall to maintain the "tree-like" look and desired size. Cold hardy (planted in the ground) to zone 5. Plants are about 5-7" tall above a 3.5"h x 4"diameter pot. *Plants are currently dormant; no leaves yet - buds only.
- Adaptable, but prefers moist, well-drained soil
- Don't overwater in winter or allow to dry out in summer
- Grow in full sun or partial shade
- Cold hardy to about -20 to -10 F
